Frequently Asked Questions

What do you mean when you say "Turkey Creek"?

Turkey Creek frequently means the small African-American neighborhood of roughly 200 people who live on Rippy Road or one of its short side streets in present-day Gulfport, Mississippi. Older than the city itself, this historic enclave of kin folks has existed since 1866 at the downstream end (or mouth) of a small coastal creek winding its way towards Bayou Bernard, Biloxi Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Also called Turkey Creek, this 13-mile stream flows through unincorporated areas of Harrison County and the city of Long Beach before entering Gulfport en route to the historic Turkey Creek community and Bayou Bernard. In addition, the entire land area (over 17,000 acres) drained by this stream and its various tributaries is known as the Turkey Creek Watershed (or basin). As the oldest and furthest downstream of all communities in the basin, residents of the Rippy Road area have been connected to their community, stream and watershed - each called "Turkey Creek" - for more than 140 years.
